This page is all about the Mimicry and Adapations of the Lyre bird!

Definition: the act, practice, or art of mimicking.

Normal Adaptations

The Lyrebird has lots of adaptations but these are only a few. It's physical adaptations are:

  • Abundant, strong legs to dig for food
  • It can leap with great speed thus getting it to longer distances
  • Can glide in the air
  • It is very territorial

Lyrebirds have behavioural adaptations as well. Such as:

  • It is more alert when it comes to flying around
  • The lyrebird scares off predators by mimicry

Mimicry

From natural to mechanical, all sounds can be imitated. Anything in the bird's immediate surroundings, such as chainsaws, car engines, dog barks and local native birds will be included in his song. A series of whistles and cackling notes that are used as territorial calls, as well as a loud alarm shriek are also added.
